Of course everybody has a band in mind that gets way too much attention for the music they make. Which bands are promoted too much and are overrated?
- Amon Amarth

Amon Amarth is definately guilty. They're a good live band, though.
My second choice would be Eluveitie. I don't really like the melodeath feel to their songs. The folk instruments are great though, but I can barely get through a full song before I move on the the next one.

Thank you. I was beginning to think that I was the only one finding Eluveitie overrated - it actually sounds very much like any Gothenburg-band, but just with weird instruments. Although I'd rather listen to Eluveitie rather than In Flames, they just aren't that great IMHO.
I agree with every single word said here so far.

Amon Amarth are great but probably a bit over rated tho.. but still they're one of my favorites.
But I think Moonsorrow are over rated I've never liked them

i'd say turisas is the pretty over rated. i like a couple of their songs a good deal. but most of their songs are mediocre and a few are god awful. but still i see more and more people saying they like em a lot and i've seen them in a bunch of top 5 folk/viking metal bands.

I'd agree with this statement. I can probably pick out a few really great songs from them, but they do seem to contain a lot of filler material. They get most of their attention from being so 'epic', methinks. Style over Substance. I have to disagree with the Moonsorrow comment, I'm extremely fond of Moonsorrow in both the writing of their material and their performance. I love their style, everything builds up so well for me as a listener, I never get bored.

I would say Korpiklaani, if only for the fact that they seemingly record albums every six months or so. I do agree to a point on Turisas though.

Although I love them Amon Amarth are definitely in there. I also despise Finntroll, Korpiklaani, and post-s/t Ensiferum and i think they are overrated. Other bands I would choose, though I don't dislike them, would be Equilibrium and Eluveitie.

Amon Amarth for sure. When it comes to viking themed Death Metal, I much prefer Unleashed.

Korpiklaani and Eluveitie, definitely. I like them both quite a lot, but they're getting too much attention for what it actually is that they're doing. All their songs sound the same. And they just do too many tours and gigs, I'm just bored of them. Oh and, Ensiferum, I never really understood why everyone likes them so much..
Amon Amarth are definitely NOT over-rated, I'd say. They're an amazing band and they've been around for so long, putting Viking Metal on the map. True, they have too many fans, and lots of "untrue" ones (if you can actually say that). And they're "guilty" for the popularity that Viking related metal gets these days - but why should that be a bad thing?
Also, on that Eluveitie / Gothenburg-thing.. I never really understood why they're called Gothenburg metal. First of all, who the f**k came up with that name anyway? (That'll be MetalStorm, I guess) Not all bands from Gothenburg sound the same, do they? Someone compared them with In Flames, I mean, what's wrong with your ears, they don't sound like IF at all! Nor any other so called "Gothenburg" band.. They're just folk metal with some (melodic) death influences.. (Sorry if I overreacted a bit here, I didn't mean to insult anyone, I'm just concerned cause I'm a big melodeath fan..)
